The EU has committed to move transportation from crowded roads and flights to more environmental friendly alternatives such as railway and coastal shipping. In the future the taxes and other duties will increase for country road transportation, while coastal shipping will be subsidized. Today large sums of money are being committed to support developing projects in these areas.

 

Supporting coastal shipping is therefore highly prioritized in the EU, and naturally in the rest of the world. It is not crowded, you can ship large amounts of cargo, the operating costs are low in comparison and the environmental effect is next to nothing. The problem is the low speeds and that the loading of cargo takes a long time.

Normally that is not a big issue with heavy and bulky cargo which is being shipped with ships already, but for other cargo that is in need of fast transportation it is a very big problem.
