COMPANY BACKGROUND
Stormfågeln arose from an ever-increasing focus into environmentally sensitive transport, mainly stimulated by increasing, and justified, concern into the emission of CO2 and its affect on the climate. In parallel, Europe is battling with the effects of clogged roads caused by increasing transport needs. As a consequence of this, the EU invests large sums each year into stimulating a transfer to more environmentally sensitive alternatives, such as maritime transport and rail transport.
The oceans of the world are uncongested. The maritime industry can cope with large loads, the operating costs are relatively low, as is the environmental impact. However, low speeds and long loading times in port limit its usefulness. It is for these reasons that maritime transport today is not generally a viable alternative for goods and passengers who require rapid transport.
Increasing speed at sea using conventional vessels is associated with major problems. Two direct consequences are an increase in fuel costs and an increase in CO2 emissions, while a third is marked wave formation. The latter causes problems for other maritime traffic and increases erosion at water edges.
It is not solely within heavy transport that we can see an increased focus on environmentally sensitive solutions, and a demand for their use. Such segments as the leisure boat industry are requesting solutions that offer lower emissions and lower fuel costs.
For this reason, Stormfågeln AB is focusing not only on solutions to increase the competitiveness of commercial shipping, but also on solutions that develop or replace the technology used by, for example, large leisure vessels.
